Vodka, the Next Big Thing in 1954

I just wrote a long story about the US vodka trade for a UK magazine. It's the first time I've ever really done an all hard-numbers story (about booze, that is). It was kinda fun. Anyway, I mentioned it to Greg Boehm of Mud Puddle Books and he sent me a similar story from 1954. TUCSON DAILY CITIZEN JUNE 26 1954 Sale Up 50 Per Cent -------- 'Moscow Mule' Sells Vodka By ROBERT ZIMMERMAN NEW YORK - It all started about eight years ago when a Los Angeles bartender poured a shot of vodka into a glass of ginger beer... Big News in Spelling

Eric Asimov of the New York Times writes: The style at The Times was to use the spelling whiskey [even when it was scotch whisky], and that’s what I did. Given the vehemence of the reaction, though, I promised to ask the editors in charge of Times style to revisit the issue. Basically, the study asserts that because more tequila brands are taking control of the agave fields, the small agave farmers are suffering. They can't sell their agave to brands as much on the open markets, because the brands now own their own fields. Additionally, the commercial... Read more →

In the Wall Street Journal this weekend, Eric Felten has a story on Captain Morgan and other spiced rums. He lists a recipe for an imitation spiced rum from our own Martin Cate of Forbidden Island, plus a drink recipe in which to mix it. Coincidentally, on Friday I was talking to Todd Thrasher of the speakeasy bar PX in Alexandria, Virginia. Thrasher told me that his guilty pleasure is Captain Morgan's. But he being the DIY king of cocktails, he not only makes his own spiced rum for the bar, he makes an imitation Coke with which to mix... Read more →
