SF Event: Kentucky Tiki

If you've been too lazy to make it to Forbidden Island in Alameda for the best tiki drinks in America, your sloth has finally paid off! Martin Cate, who recently left the bar, will be pouring tiki drinks at Bourbon & Branch on March 30th. Martin will be pouring all the drinks himself, so let's see if we can break him. More info and RSVP here on Facebook. The event will be in one of the private rooms, so no need to call the bar for reservations. Also, "Aloha wear will be mandatory!" Read more →

With a slew of new bars opening in San Francisco over the past six months, I decided to go check a few of them out last week. Unfortunately, I picked the wrong day to do it- a Monday. The first stop was Triple Crown, a lounge/dance bar/ restaurant in the former Octavia Lounge space. It was closed, but luckily they left the door open so I could pop my head in and have a look. The space is largely one room with plush banquet benches lining the walls, plus a smaller room for the bar/restaurant. There is no cocktail menu... Read more →

With Pisco Sours all the rage these days, people have been seeking out real Peruvian bitters to dash atop the foam of their drinks instead of Angostura. I found them available for sale in the US at PeruCooking.com. The Amargo Chuncho bitters have the cinnamon/allspice flavors of Angostura, but with some bright cherry notes to them as well. I also got some instant Pisco Sour and Pisco Punch mix from the site. Both mixes are made with freeze-dried ingredients: sugar, lemon juice, and egg whites in the sour mix, and pineapple, orange, and lemon juices in the punch mix. (The... Read more →

Did you ever get the feeling you were the last drink writer or bartender on earth without an iPhone app to call your own? That's how I felt when I read my email this morning. With Simon Difford, Cocktail DB/Doc Cocktail, Jimmy Patrick, and soon Cheryl Charming each having iPhone cocktail applications, it only make sense that Gary Regan and Mardee Haidin Regan would jump into the fray, as they announced today via email. The new app, called Flip N Drink, promises hundreds of cocktail recipes with more to come in future months. The recipes are not just from the... Read more →

Reminder: This Wednesday is the latest Three on Five pairing challenge at the Fifth Floor Restaurant. The contest pits house sommelier Emily Wines pairing wines against Craig Whathen of City Beer Store pairing beer against Neyah White of Nopa pairing cocktails. This time, it's a five-course all-vegetarian menu. Bring on the Broccotinis! So that's 15 drinks, 5 courses, and special guest *me* all for $125. To make a reservation, call 415-348-1555 and make sure to specify the "Three on Five" event. It starts at 7PM. Hope to see some of you there. Information on the past events is here. Read more →

A couple of weeks ago I helped judge the Damrak gin cocktail competition in San Francisco. Over the course of two days we drove around to 18 bars in vintage Cadillacs and judged a drink at each. It was a heck of a lot of work, but we helped make five people very happy with trips to Amsterdam. The winning recipes are: Always Sunny by Wes Bouchia of Yoshi’s The Greenhouse by Jonny Raglin of Absinthe The Flying Dutchman by Jenn Philpot of Waterbar The Dr. Fazi by Will Herrarra of Cosmopolitan Café Golden Gate Gimlet by John Solorzano of... Cocktail Theory

Great. Like there weren't enough unproven theories as to the origin of the word "cocktail" Jared Brown comes up with another one. Because a cocktail is a "bittered sling" (the sling being a drink category of its own) and bitters dashers bottles used a feather (such as a rooster's tail feather) as the pouring spout, Jared proposes the origin of the word could come from the feather in the bitters bottle. Read his theory here. Read more →

New Page for Educational Programs

Hey y'all- Since Alcademics is all about learning, I thought I'd add a page for educational programs open to the public to learn about beer, wine, spirits, and cocktails. The link is listed at the right under "Hot Links", or you can go directly to it here. As you can see, I've just started it, so all you PR folk and bartenders should feel free to send me a link to your programs. (Just a link and location, make it easy for me.) Read more →
