August 2009

Glossy Booze is a regular Alcademics feature in which I note the coverage of alcohol in glossy magazines. Fine Cooking (August/September) has a story on beer cocktails written by Lew Bryson. Sherman's Travel (summer 2009) lists which Napa wines to buy now. In Gourmet (August) David Wondrich writes a story about (wait for it, wait for it, wait for it...) punch! Mutineer (August/September) has a multi-bartender feature shot at Edison in LA, wine date ideas, breakfast drinks, and minimalist cocktails by blogging's own Rick Stutz. Sunset (August) has a story on Canada's Okanagan Valley wine region and another on summery... Read more →

Here are some events happening for people not in San Francisco for a change. Canadian Mist is doing a Science of the Cocktail tour with information about: • Ice – How to cool your drink down without watering it down. Ice shavings versus ice cubes (surface area) • Movement – "Shaken vs. Stirred" • Carbonation – Talk about how to keep carbonation in your cocktail / bottle of champagne. Discuss how carbonation carries flavor. • Mixing – Why it is important to pour the alcohol in first and then the mixer (specific gravity). • Garnish – How do garnishes affect... Read more →

Germain-Robin, a brandy maker based in Ukiah, California, has released an absinthe. This one is an absinthe blanche, meaning that it's clear because no additional herbs are infused after distillation. It's also much lower in proof than other absinthes (45% as opposed to up to 70%) and pleasingly bitter. I don't add sugar to any of the absinthes I have around the house, but maybe I would to this. On the other hand, maybe not. The aftertaste is ridiculously long and chalky and floral and rosy like the most delicious Milk of Magnesia in the world. They only sent me... Read more →

Drinks With... is a regular Alcademics feature in which I share what I've learned over drinks with industry notables. Norman Bonchick is the chairman and CEO of Van Gogh Imports. I met him in early August at Chaya Brasserie in San Francisco to talk vodka, as they're launching a new flavored and a new unflavored vodka. Talking with vodka people is always interesting, because the conversation is less about artisanal cocktails and more about figuring out consumer trends and trying to make products to match them. Unlike many brands, Van Gogh does 80% of its business in flavors and the... Read more →

I get a lot of press kits in the mail. Lately the USB drives they put the images and information on have been getting really colorful. You know how some people have really awesome collections of vintage barware and cocktail books from the 1800's? Maybe in 50 years I'll have the biggest collection of branded thumb drives and novelty muddlers. Then you'll be jealous! Read more →
