While it didn't take long at all for several sweet tea vodka imitators to launch after the initial success of Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, elderflower liquors have been slower to be created in the wake of the incredibly successful St. Germain elderflower liqueur that launched a couple years ago. Just recently though, Thatcher's Organic Elderflower liqueur started hitting the market. And now the new Absolut vodka city series has been announced: Absolut Boston will come in black tea and elderflower flavor. If only that was sweet tea and elderflower, we'd have a megatrend. What Would You Ask Patron's Master Distiller?

What Would You Ask... is a new Alcademics feature in which you can submit questions and I'll take them to upcoming interviews with spirits industry professionals. Is there something you want to know about the person or brand? Have you heard a rumor you want to confirm? Want to know what the future holds? Leave your questions in the comments or if you'd like to keep them private send me an email. As always, keep it classy. On Wednesday August 12 I'm meeting Patron's master distiller, Francisco Alcaraz. Some tequila snobs dismiss Patron due in part to the status-seeking crowd... Read more →

The BARSmarts program is sponsored by Pernod-Ricard. Beam Global is getting in on the training action also, partnering with the United States Bartenders' Guild (USBG) to announce their own set of credentialing. The new USBG Master Accreditation Program is offered in three levels, and non-USBG members... Read more →

Drinks With: Cuervo Tequila Bigshots

Drinks With... is a regular Alcademics category where I share what I learned when meeting with industry notables. You answered here and on Facebook. I didn't get to ask all your questions but I learned some really interesting stuff. Alfaro lives in Mexico City and is also one of the people who helped decide on the Riedel tequila glass that I use nearly every day. Pre-Spanish Distillation? I first asked about the theory beginning... Read more →

Drinks With... is an Alcademics category in which I share what I've learned when meeting with industry notables. This July I had a group dinner and drinks at Tres Agaves with Gaston Martinez of Milagro Tequila. Milagro has two lines of tequila- a "core" and "select" line. I've always liked Milagro as a good-priced mixing tequila but had never tried the reserve line. Milagro is triple-distilled. Traditionally when we talk about 100% agave tequila, we think of double-pot-distilled, but lately more and more brands have been releasing triple distilled products. But the more you distill, the more flavor you take... Read more →
