Passing the B.A.R.

This past fall I took the B.A.R., Beverage Alcohol Resource, five-day course in New York. The course has two levels- "Ready" and "Certified", with the only difference in the number of drinks one has to make within a certain time on the practical bartending exam. The course ran for about 12 hours each day for the first four days, with nearly a full day of testing on the last day. It was a real butt-kicker. People seemed to come away with different impressions of the course, but what stuck out most to me was what you need to know not... Read more →

I'm increasingly interested in how different alcohol production/control and marketing bureaus differ from each other in their approach to promoting their common interests. The Scotch Whisky Association leads by litigation and has good information on its website, but doesn't seem to do all that much outreach to press. Neither tequila's CRT (regulatory agency) or the CNIT (industry bureau) is doing a good job of any sort with regard to PR, seemingly leaving brands to do the work. Lately I've noticed the Cognac Bureau, the BNIC, adding new programs, hosting events, and launching online tools that are actually useful. Go cognac!... Read more →

I love how cocktails are such a large and increasing part of modern culture that other seemingly unrelated industries are hitching a ride. Airlines advertise their cocktail programs, countries promote their national cocktails as part of their tourism ads, and food groups like the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board are pairing their wares not only with wine, but with cocktails. The latest press release to give me pause was from the National Peanut Board promoting cocktails made with peanut butter and peanut-infused rum. Awesome. Read more →

Lady Gaga's new video "Bad Romance" has some product placement in it, this time for Nemiroff vodka. I usually don't care about things of this nature, but when Lady Gaga does something it's good to pay attention. In her previous video for LoveGame, people were apparently drinking Campari out of the bottle on the subway while watching Gaga dance. How this impacted sales of Campari I do not know. In Bad Romance, we get a flash of the bottle in the beginning then a second shot of it being poured into a glass around 2:28. (If you can't see the... Read more →

Pop-Up Shop Meets Pop-Up Bar in London

The press release is way too long to post for this event, but I like the concept. It's a pop-up liquor shop/bar experience in London. You can taste cocktail samples with your entry fee or purchase rare samples to taste (and perhaps take home?). I like the idea of an event where you try liquor before you buy it- especially for expensive holiday gifts. If only liquor stores would allow sampling, we wouldn't need cool events like this. It's November 27th and 28th in London. Info here. Read more →
