Scheduled to open on May 20th in San Francisco is the Comstock Saloon, the restaurant and bar by Jonny Raglin and Jeff Hollinger of Absinthe. The website is looking good and now has a sample menu (PDF) available for viewing. (I've also pasted it below the jump.) The physical space is looking great too, although it's hard to photograph to show the layout. (The bar, stocked with vintage glassware for people seated at the bar on the right, and regular glassware on the left. ) (Side view of the bar. Vintage mechanical ceiling fans above. Booths are across from the... Read more →

Scheduled to open on May 27th in the Crescent Hotel in San Francisco is the new bar Burritt Room. I had a peek at the very-much-still-under-construction space. The hotel is located a couple doors down from the Stockton Tunnel, but was built before the tunnel in 1910. It was recently renovated into a boutique hotel with rooms going for as little as $89/night- quite a bargain for something so close to Union Square. The bar is on the second floor but was originally the hotel lobby. In the process of preparing the room they had to pull off four layers... Read more →

Have you seen the Shaker Faces website? It's where bartenders show off their shakes. No, not "the shakes," but their cocktail shaking technique. It's a good time. So far the majority of featured bartenders featured on the site are from San Francisco, but if you're a bartender who'll be in New York for the Manhattan Cocktail Classic you'll have the chance to even out the geography. As you can see in the image above, the studio is open 12PM - 2PM Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday during the Manhattan Cocktail Classic at the Chinatown Brasserie at 380 Lafayette Street. As to... I receive zillions of lousy recipes from PR companies (three four paired to the new Sex and the City movie today alone) and I don't post most of them. But every so often one actually has interesting ingredients or makes me laugh. Chopin vodka has a new "steak and potatoes" recipe campaign, but instead of pairing cocktails to steak they pair them to steak sauce. I suppose as a vegetarian I should be thrilled, as I can just dump the steak sauce on tofu and whip up the same drinks. The recipes are below the jump. CHOPIN VODKA INTRODUCES “STEAK... Read more →

The Olive Centipede was created by Dr. Heiner, a disturbed German bartender formerly famous for his flair garnishing techniques. The evil Dr. Heiner decided to create a garnish centipede, made from sewing three olives together along the olives' digestive tracks, pit-to-pimento. Read more →
