While normal people were sleeping, friend and web developer Humuhumu was cranking out a new set of banners that I'll rotate on Alcademics. She even provided an idiot-proof template for the Photoshop-challenged user that is me to make additional banners going forward. She is The Awesome. Keep her in mind for your web graphic/design/programming projects! Read more →

How to Booze: Exquisite Cocktails and Unsound Advice by Jordan Kaye and Marshall Altier was released a couple of weeks ago. The book purports to be a pairing of cocktails with the appropriate life situations, but after reading it I think of it as often hilarious, well-written text and very good recipes; many of them new to me. I don't necessarily agree that the Negroni is the perfect drink to have during a threesome (perhaps something more hydrating), but I like the thought that went into it and how they make the text all about the motives on the TV... There is so much happening with beer right now I'm not able to keep up (I have my hands full with cocktails) but here are some awesome items of interest: - The Alembic has launched a barrel aged beer list, with "some very rare and unusual offerings, and new stuff coming in all the time." - The Monk's Kettle is launching a vintage beer list starting June 18th. There are several styles of beer that are well-suited for aging, and they are generally higher in alcohol, and often bottle-conditioned (with yeast in the bottle for an additional fermentation). Styles that... Read more →

I recently read the book Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations by Clay Shirky to gain some more insight on the changing media landscape in the age of digital publishing. My question was basically: What is the future of journalism and news publishing in an age when everybody can start a blog and become a publisher? (Read: Should I be looking for a new profession?) The book covers a lot more ground than just my question, but does a great job at addressing it and hinting at the future. In the olden days the cost of printing... Read more →

How do I look? After much work with my friend best known by her tiki name, Humuhumu, Alcademics has been redesigned. Humu has designed websites including Critiki, Ooga-Mooga, and the website for Smuggler's Cove as well. This is how this site used to look: I tried to work as much as possible within the framework of the Typepad back-end, with Humu adding custom CSS and additional graphics when necessary. There are big changes such as rearranging the main content column to the center and highlighting it with large text, and darkening the background color for easier reading. There were also... It's about time I got around to talking about the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, as it happened a few weeks ago. I was only able to go to New York for 2 1/2 days but in that time managed to hit Cienfuegos twice, PDT once, Death & Co. twice, and Mayahuel twice. I love that they're all walkable from each other. The problem with having a big cocktail event in New York is that there is so much New York in New York. You spend all your time running around to catch up on the new bars and such, sometimes oversleeping... Read more →

I finally finished going through The Modern Mixologist: Contemporary Classic Cocktails by Tony Abou-Ganim with Mary Elizabeth Faulkner. Tony Abou-Ganim is one of the top beverage program developers in the country, having run drink programs for the Bellagio in Vegas and Crystal Cruise Lines among other places. The book is both a technique and recipe book, with a couple of stand-out factors. In the technique section- the first 83 pages of the book- there is a great timeline of The Evolution of Mixology. I also like the four-page chart of seasonal ingredients that lists their season, preparation method you should... Read more →
