Cocktail Menu: Winter Drinks at Cana in Los Angeles

The new winter menu at Cana Rum Bar in LA looks amazing. One of everything! DAGGERS Royal Oil |12 Without naming names, we’ve devised a new cocktail to replace a very old one that’s recently found favor with Polynesiacs and cocktail nerds enthusiasts. The result isn’t just tasty, it’s difficult to say after you’ve had a few of them. St. James Royal Ambre, Black Strap, lime, falernum Misti Dawn Swizzle |12 Keeping with naming gin swizzles after actresses, Mr. Goodyear was conscripted to provide you a cocktail that “tastes like it’s been places.” With ingredients from Africa to Austria this... In September 2010 I visited several sherry bodegas. Here are food pictures from the area. Food in the sherry region is all about seafood and Iberian ham, all served tapas-style. I think the meat eaters on my trip must have had ham ten different ways. (Langostinos.) (Mmm, gazpacho. I had tomatoes about 15 different ways.) (Two of the writers on our trip, sweaty and crazed, post-hamgasm.) (Eating outdoors in Jerez. This was before the 40 or so plates of tapas arrived. I focussed primarily on the sherry.) (Bull meat in the market.) (A nightclub near our hotel serves a San... Read more →

The New Anchor Empire

Several months back, Anchor Brewing, the company that makes Anchor Steam Beer, Junipero Gin, and a few other small batch spirits, was sold. But I didn't realize until last week that this was just one part of a much larger change: Anchor is now the centerpiece of a new spirits company in the likeness of Diageo, Beam Global, and Skyy Spirits. The new company, called Anchor Brewers & Distillers, LLC, is made up of three formerly separate companies who are now partners in the new one: The old Anchor Brewing and Distilling Preiss Imports, an import spirits company with small... Brands of celery bitters include The Bitter Truth, Scrappy's, and Fees. It's the hottest flavor in bitters since grapefruit. In my latest post for FineCooking.com, I briefly introduce the trend and list a recipe for the Garden & Tonic, a G&T spin-off created by Wayne Collins and Naren Young. Read more →

In September 2010 I visited several sherry bodegas. Here are pictures and a few notes from Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana, which is located in Sanlucar de Barrameda. (La Gitana is their most famous brand. It's a manzanilla; similar to fino but aged in Sanlucar.) (The bodegas were wonderfully old, moldy, and dusty.) (One of the old bullfight posters taped to the wall in the bodega.) (Our host, a curmudgeonly sort who basically disagreed with everything we learned all week. We liked him anyway.) (A view of the bodega.) More humidity and less exreme temperature swings in Sanlucar Flor is thicker... Read more →

For the second year of the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, they are having people vote on which seminars they'd like to see. I hope the ones I've proposed are of interest, as I'd like to come to New York this May. To vote, simply go to this page and select a minimum of 5 and not more than 30 seminars you're interested in. You get one vote per email and you must do so before February 16th. (Shortcut: Search for "Camper" and click those three first.) My proposed talk topics are below: 23. Tequila is the New Vodka, Tequila is the... Read more →

I helped judge the San Francisco regional cocktail competition for 42Below. The two winners of this contest will compete in the national competition, then three winners from the US will make up the team that will compete in New Zealand in March. The first winner was Michael Callahan of Azul. His drink, the Fugutini, was made with 42Below Manuka Honey vodka, ume-shu plum wine, Mathilde Poire, and lemon juice. It was fantastic with a long, dry finish. The garnish, which was was a bit...excessive, was dehydrated and shaved pickeld ginger with black Hawaiian sea salt and fugu poison on the... Read more →
