June 2011

The first round of the G'Vine Gin Connoisseur 2011 World Finals was the Speed Drink Making Round. The fifteen contestants from around the world had to make two Gin and Tonics with different tonics, a Jasmine (gin, Campari, Cointreau, lemon), Floral Martini, and a Negroni. I don't know the winner yet, but here are some pics of the contestants doing their thing. Click below for more. (Some contestants made flow charts for maximum efficiency.) (The German contestant was using two jiggers in one hand in a model of efficiency.) (And Gary Regan went last to show the whippersnappers how it's... Read more →

Hello from Cognac! I'll be covering the G'Vine Gin Connoisseur 2011 World Finals taking place this week, along with Emma of Gin Monkey. There are three days of challenges and fifteen bartenders in the competition, which culminates at the G'Vine Summer Ball in Cognac on Thursday evening. Last night we arrived from various places in the world and picked the bars corresponding to each bartender at the Summer Ball- important as the attendees will vote for their favorites and help choose a winner from among them. And it's always a good thing when a week starts out with someone being... Read more →

Tales of the Cocktail Preview: How The Global Drinks Business Works

This is a preview of a seminar that will be given at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans, which takes place July 20-24, 2011. I've been writing full-time about liquor since around 2005 and sometimes I'm still confused about who is the brand owner versus importer versus who has the distribution rights in which country and where stuff is sold. The global drinks business is some wild, wacky stuff. Based on the description below, I asked session moderator Philip Duff some questions. How The Global Drinks Business Works Time: 3 PM to 4:30 PM Date: Wednesday the 20th of... Read more →

Tales of the Cocktail Preview: The Chainsaw Shift

This is a preview of a seminar that will be given at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans, which takes place July 20-24, 2011. The Chainsaw Shift There are two seminars this year at Tales about setting up an ice program. I'm pretty sure this one will be the only one with chainsaws though. The other, How to Build a Cutting Edge Ice Program, is part of the professionals series, though both seem geared toward professionals. I was treated to a preview of sorts of this seminar in San Francisco, as Andrew Bohrer came down and gave bartenders a... Read more →

Tales of the Cocktail Preview: Classic Hotel Bars

I am writing up several previews of seminars for the Tales of the Cocktail convention in New Orleans. This write-up is about the seminar called Classic Hotel Bars, lead by a couple of gin ambassadors. Before Prohibition, cocktails were largely an American thing, though "American bars" were beginning to pop up around Europe. By calling them American bars, this typically meant that they served cocktails, and that those cocktails had ice in them; not common in many countries at the time. Then Prohibition hit and many career bartenders fled the country to take up their profession elsewhere. They wound up... Read more →

Tales of the Cocktail Preview: What the V.O.C. Did for the Modern Bar

This is a preview of a seminar that will be given at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans, which takes place July 20-24, 2011. The V.O.C., better known as the Dutch East India Company, influenced world history as well as the world of cocktails. It was a corporation big enough that it waged wars, coined currency, and executed prisoners. It was established in 1602 and given a government-granted trade monopoly with Asia, with the main purpose being to enter the spice trade that was until that point dominated by Portugal. The company was highly prosperous until the later 1700's, and...
