In addition to the cocktails below, they'll also be serving Coquito (Puerto Rican egg nog made with coconut cream, coconut milk toasted spices white and dark rum) from Rivera's grandfather's recipe from Dec 19 to January 6th. When I was on the Amalfi Coast this summer I had a cocktail of which I was suspicious because it had a base of Pallini Limoncello. A 26% alcohol liqueur does not a great cocktail base make. (I need to learn how to white balance.) But the inventor of the drink, Philip Duff, made it work. He added the bitterness of tonic water and of Angostura bitters, and the acids from citrus. Together they counteract the sweetness of the limoncello enough to make a hearty yet low-alcohol cocktail. He called the drink the LLB, named after the Lemon, Lime, and... Read more →

The Hotsy Totsy Club, a bar in the East Bay not far from San Francisco (but far enough that I haven't been there yet!), has a new winter cocktail menu. I see: cinnamon vermouth, bottled cocktails, barrel-aged Negronis, and my first sighting of the Tempis Fugit créme de caçao on a menu. Woot! The menu is below the jump. WINTER HOUSE SPECIALTY COCKTAILS New Fashioned 9 novo fogo cachaça, cherry liqueur, walnut bitters + club soda on the rocks. Redlands 8 sino reposado tequila, cinnamon vermouth, jujube syrup + cranberry bitters. Bottled Bitter Rivers 7 citadelle gin, aperol, a splash... Read more →

This week I was in LA for two days and hit some bars with like-minded boozers. Here's a recap. I started off at Seven Grand for a whisky event sponsored by the LA Times. There I was in charge of mingling and answering questions: tough work. After a few glasses of scotch we headed to Bar/Kitchen in the O Hotel. That's a fairly casual restaurant with a small but excellent cocktail list. I had some risotto and a Chapter & Verse, made with rye whiskey, amontillado sherry, amaro, elderflower, and bénédictine. So good. Then it was off to The Varnish... Read more →

I have a short piece in the new issue of Caviar Affair magazine describing the influence of Japanese bartending on the rest of the world. The magazine also has lots of pricey booze recomendations, stories about port and cognac, and a few bartenders you may know. The digital version of the magazine is at this link, and my Japanese bartending story is on page 39. Read more →

Hey, I'm in GQ magazine in the December issue. Surprisingly not as their Man of the Year, but in the Bombay Sapphire advertorial looking somewhat constipated. The four-page spread is about the Most Inspired Bartender contest 2011, for which I was one of the judges. We all carved our names into that ice block in the background. Most of the pictures are of bartenders outfitted in Ted Baker clothing, looking good. I've scanned and pasted the pages below the jump. Read more →

I realized the other day that I have kind of a lot of coasters for a one-bedroom apartment. I counted them: 67 coasters. That is too many. Luckily, about half of them are disposable cardboard ones (though many of those are souvenirs and I probably won't dispose of them) that can be thinned. Or maybe I should find a way to tile the bathroom with them. Below are some of my favorites. (From Japan) (From Sweden) (From Barcelona) (From the Mixoloseum.) (From Singapore.) (From the Mandarin Oriental in Vegas.) (From Amsterdam.) Read more →
