Merlet of France Introduces Sélection St. Sauvant
Merlet Sélection St. Sauvant is a blend of cognacs produced by the Merlet family. Elaborated by Gilles and his two sons, Pierre and Luc, fifth generation of Merlet distillers, the blend is produced with less than 800 bottles available in U.S. It is product of France and 45.2% ABV.
“Assemblage N°1” (Blend N°1) was bottled in 2013. This cognac is a marriage of “eaux-de-vie” from the Petite Champagne and Grande Champagne aged over 10 years as well as from the Fins bois (1992 and 2001) and from the Petite Champagne (1993). The alcohol strength is then slowly reduced.
This Cognac will be introduced to the U.S. in the fall of 2014 with a retail selling price of approximately $99.95.

The Merlet family, winegrowers in the Saintonge area for more than two hundred years, installed its first alambic pot-still in Saint Sauvant in 1850 to produce Cognac eau-de-vie and this led naturally to producing Pineau des Charentes. While most of the blackcurrant is produced in Burgundy (“Cassis de Dijon”), Gilles Merlet became a pioneer by experimenting with the plantation of blackcurrants in the place of vines during the 1970s in a region which had produced only wine and cognac up to that time. The production of a blackcurrant cordial which became “Crème de Cassis de la Saintonge Boisée” was the first in a range of Fruit Cordials.
