I've been bursting waiting for the Saveur 100 issue to come out so I could write more about Gamsei, a bar I visited in Munich this fall and included in the January issue of the magazine. The story is now online at Saveur.com, with a lot more info below. Gamsei comes from Matt Bax, the founder/co-founder of Der Raum and Bar Americano in Melbourne and Tippling Club in Singapore. From the write-ups of Gamsei, it sounded like a place with a lot of rules (you have to wear slippers inside, no sugar in the drinks, no photos allowed) but much... Read more →

I'll be speaking and leading tastings at this year's Bar Convent Berlin in October. Diageo is experimenting with crowdsourcing and Absolut has set up a boutique distillery in Berlin. The following story comes from Mixology Magazine in Germany. It was written by Helmut Adam and was originally published in German here. It was translated into English by Kirstin Müller. Below is an edited version of the translation. Bartenders participating in Diageo’s World Class Programme [in Europe] are encouraged to submit their ideas for a [new spirit or liqueur]. In May 2013, a jury of Diageo professionals and industry heavy-weights such as Salvatore Calabrese and Jörg Meyer is going to evaluate the submissions and select... Read more →

A couple of months ago I visited Berlin for the Bar Convent. On that visit I hit up Lebensstern, the bar that won World's Best Drink Selection at Tales of the Cocktail in 2010. My quick write-up on the bar is here. I asked permission to print the cocktail menu and they kindly agreed. Note that this is merely the cocktails - the spirit selection, scattered in display cases throughout the house, is also quite extraordinary. Lebensstern Cocktail Menu English Version (via Google Translate) Snowflake 13.50 Lebensstern Gin St. Germain Elderflower Fri Lemon Champagne Pierre Gimonnet Seelbach 15.00 Noah's Mill... Read more →

The German paper Zeit wrote up the Bar Convent Berlin, where I was this past week. Most of the article is about the talk I gave with Phil Duff and Elayne Duke on future trends in global mixology. Of course I can't read it, so I used Google Translate. The best part of the translation is the author calling Philip Duff "professionally cuddly." Another highlight is my description: Although most of the time talking to Duff, he is not alone on the stage. Beside him sits a little cramped, a man with horn-rimmed glasses named Camper English, who as a... Read more →
