Celery Bitters are the New Grapefruit Bitters
January 26, 2011
Brands of celery bitters include The Bitter Truth, Scrappy's, and Fees. It's the hottest flavor in bitters since grapefruit.
In my latest post for FineCooking.com, I briefly introduce the trend and list a recipe for the Garden & Tonic, a G&T spin-off created by Wayne Collins and Naren Young.
Don't really recall grapefruit bitters being all that hot or interesting. Especially since grapefruit itself decays in a short time so what's left is either artificial or the supporting flavors (which is why one brand uses citrussy hops).

I LOVE celery in cocktails. I have been searching for a vegetal ingredient that doesn't involve tomatoes and celery is great because it's light, salty and vegetal. If you get a chance to try celery drinking vinegar, I highly recommend that too. Ping in Portland has a great cocktail that has Celery drinking vinegar, Krogstad Aquavit, sugar and soda called the Krogstad cooler. I could drink them all day.

I heard about PING's drinking vinegars - so want! I had a drink in Glasgow that used celery as a juice and bittering agent mixed with cognac. Loved it.
