The Weird Affinity Between ZU Vodka and Cocchi Americano



ZU vodka, known in the rest of the world as Zubrowka, is starting to appear in more serious drinks than just mixed with the usual apple juice.


Oddly enough, in each of these better drinks in which I've seen ZU used, it has been used in concert with Cocchi Americano. 

At Providence in Los Angeles:

Ellis Island
ZU Bison Grass Vodka, Cocchi Americano, Gruner Vetliner wine, and celery bitters

At AQ restaurant in San Francisco:



Bison Rose
Zubroska Bison Grass Vodka, Cocchi Americano, Meyer Lemon, Rosemary Shrub

At Blackbird in San Francisco:

Golden Glove
Zu vodka, Cocchi Americano, Apple Juice, Celery Bitters

It has a weird affinity for Angostura Bitters (the bison grass flavor matches Ango's spice) and worked well in the Clubland we made with it. Not sure if the white port did anything magical though.


I'll have to pull out the Bittermen's Celery Shrubb and get a bottle of Zubroska (the only zoo in our house is Playmobil) and see what this all means. That said, in our haus the americano seldom gets beyond soda/orange/ice or some last word variation.
