New Booze for January 2016: Lots of Rye Plus Other Stuff
February 02, 2016
Yes I'm aware that it's February, but I got behind on posting New Booze. I'm going to try to do it about monthly from now on. Wish me luck.
Here are some of the new spirits hitting the market over the last couple of months.
Redemption Rye Aged Barrel Proof Collection
The Redemption Aged Barrel Proof straight rye whiskey selections are distilled from a mash of 95 percent premium rye and 5 percent malted barley that has been aged between 6-10 years in charred new oak barrels. After being properly aged, each whiskey is minimally filtered and bottled immediately at full proof.
7 Years (122.6 Proof; $79.99 SRP), 8 Years (121.5 Proof; $89.99 SRP), 10 Years (110.1 Proof; $129.99 SRP)
Frey Ranch Estate Distillery Gin
Frey Ranch Gin is an estate product, meaning it is produced From Ground to Glass, right on the ranch. The product begins with three different grains – rye, barley and corn – grown and milled right on the ranch and combined with juniper berries and sagebrush sourced from the ranch. These ingredients are joined by coriander, Angelia root, cardamom pod, lemon peel and orange peel.
SRP $36-38.

Aged one year in 10-gallon charred oak barrels and finished in sherry and cognac casks, Roknar is known as "Minnesota Rye Whiskey".

Campo de Encanto Pisco Barkeep's Whimsy
Campo de Encanto is introducing their newest Pisco expression: the Barkeep's Whimsy (ABV 40.5%, SRP $49.99), an original Pisco blend by some of the world's top bartenders. Barkeep's Whimsy is currently available in California and will be rolling out into additional markets in the US and abroad beginning in March 2016.
Since 2011, Encanto has executed its successful Distiller's Apprentice competition, hand selecting small groups of bartenders from around the world to travel with the Encanto team to Ica, Peru to experience firsthand the art of handcrafting Pisco – from grape harvest to blending. During the program, participants were challenged to create their own signature Pisco blend. The Barkeep's Whimsy is the final whimsical fruit of the labors of these groups of acclaimed bartenders – a blend inspired by bartender palates and produced using Encanto’s signature solera blending style.
Crafted with the same five grapes used in the brand’s Grand & Noble (Torontel, Quebranta, Moscatel, Mollar and Italia), Barkeep’s Whimsy turns that original recipe on its head by leading with the Torontel grape - a very aromatic varietal also known as Torontés in Argentina.
Lucas Bols launches Bols Parfait Amour Liqueur in the United States. This purple-colored liqueur will be the latest addition to the 30+ Bols flavors available in the country. Bols Parfait Amour comes in a 750ml bottle and retails for $17.99 with 24% ABV.
Parfait Amour, which translates to “perfect love”, has been produced by Lucas Bols since the early 19th century when it was served to celebrate either an engagement or marriage in the Netherlands. It is a dark purple liqueur with an aromatic floral taste that comes from rose and violet petals, enhanced by vanilla, orange peel and almonds.
Alacran Cristal is an anejo tequila that uses agaves from 7-10 years old harvested in the highlands of Jalisco. It is matured for 14 months in American Oak barrels from bourbon, then put through an exclusive clarifying filtration process. It retails for $49.00-$59.00.
Henry DuYore's Rye Whiskey
The mash bill: roughly 78% rye and 22% barley, resulting in a sweeter rye whiskey compared to others.
Distilling Process: 35% Pot distilled in the Ransom 265 and 660 gallon Prulho alambic copper stills. All cuts made by smell and taste. 65% Column distilled at Lawrenceburg Distillery, in Indiana. Rye proved to be a worthy adversary for the old-fashioned Ransom mashing system, which was originally designed for the more cooperative malted barley. The texture of the rye grain made it impossible to push Ransom’s house-mashed base wort above fifty percent rye, so Tad Seestedt selected a well-made rye white dog to bring the rye to the forefront of our blend.
Aged 18 months in barrel. 100% aged, blended, and bottled at Ransom. 46.1% alcohol by volume (92.2 proof). 750 mL bottle. SRP $39.95.
Glenmorangie Milsean
Glenmorangie Milsean is the first Glenmorangie to be extra-matured in deeply toasted wine casks. Glenmorangie Milsean (Scots Gaelic for ‘sweet things’), which will launch in 2016, is the seventh and latest release in the award-winning Private Edition range.
Created from Glenmorangie first matured in ex-bourbon oak casks, Glenmorangie Milsean (pronounced ‘Meel-shawn’) then spent several years in casks which had contained Portuguese red wine. Yet before they were used to create a Glenmorangie Private Edition, these casks were involved in an experiment by Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation. Dr Bill Lumsden arranged for the casks to be heavily toasted to enhance the sweeter notes of Glenmorangie
Glenmorangie Milsean will be available starting January 2016 at select retailers for $99 US, 1,500 cases have been imported.
